France Urges US to Pressure Israel Over Lebanon Hostilities

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has called on the United States to use its influence on Israel to stop ongoing hostilities in Lebanon.

Speaking to French broadcaster Franceinfo, Barrot said France was continuing efforts to organise an international conference aimed at mobilising support for the Lebanese army.

His remarks came as Israel’s military said it was continuing operations against Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, despite the US-Iran memorandum of understanding calling for an end to attacks on Lebanon.

Barrot also said France would not support lifting United Nations Security Council sanctions on Iran unless it is convinced that negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme meet its expectations.
