Islamabad: Pakistan’s political temperature is rising as three major protest movements are expected to converge on the federal capital in the final week of September, with opposition and interest groups preparing demonstrations over economic, agricultural and political issues.
The Jamaat-e-Islami is scheduled to hold a decisive long march towards Islamabad on September 20, protesting against high petrol prices, rising electricity bills and taxation policies.
On September 25, the Pakistan Kisan Ittehad Union is expected to march towards the federal capital over the worsening agricultural crisis and to press the government to address farmers’ demands.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also announced nationwide protests on September 27, with supporters expected to mobilise across the country and move towards Islamabad as part of a major political campaign.
The three planned mobilisations within a single week could put significant pressure on the government and turn September into a month of intensified political activity, protests and demonstrations across Pakistan.
