TEL AVIV: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Iran as an existential threat to Israel, saying there is a unique opportunity to eliminate the threat permanently in cooperation with US President Donald Trump.
According to international media reports, Netanyahu made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Wednesday. He described the United States as a partner of Israel and stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity to address what he considers a threat posed by Iran.
However, the Israeli prime minister did not provide details about any potential new military operation, its timing or a specific plan. US President Donald Trump had not publicly responded to Netanyahu’s remarks at the time of the report.
Meanwhile, preliminary results from Israel’s general election show Netanyahu’s electoral bloc in the lead, although it may need the support of additional parties to secure the parliamentary majority required to form a government.
According to the report, Netanyahu also sought to benefit politically during the election campaign from statements and positions backed by Trump.
The report further claimed that disagreements had emerged within the Israeli military over plans for an attack on Iran two days before the election.
However, no further details about the alleged differences were provided in the report.
