TEHRAN – Iran has announced the official funeral schedule for its late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies set to begin in the capital, Tehran, on July 4 and conclude with his burial in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad on July 9.
According to Iranian state media, the multi-day funeral proceedings will include public mourning ceremonies, official commemorations, and tributes from political, religious, and military leaders.
The final burial ceremony is expected to take place in Mashhad, one of Iran’s most significant religious centers and home to the shrine of Imam Reza (AS).
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades, was reported to have been killed in Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran in February. His death marked a major turning point in the country’s modern history and triggered widespread reactions across the region and beyond.
As Supreme Leader, Khamenei played a central role in shaping Iran’s domestic policies and foreign relations. His leadership influenced key developments in the Middle East and positioned Iran as a major regional power.
Iranian authorities are preparing extensive security and logistical arrangements for the funeral processions, which are expected to attract millions of mourners from across the country and delegations from abroad.
The announcement of the funeral schedule comes as Iran continues to navigate a sensitive political transition following the loss of its highest-ranking leader.
