Riyadh/Sanaa: Houthi fighters on Sunday claimed they had used drones and missiles to target a Saudi military base in southern Saudi Arabia, as renewed fighting in Yemen intensified fears of a wider escalation around the Red Sea.
The group said the Sharurah military base was targeted because it allegedly houses weapons depots and command-and-control centres. The claim comes amid renewed clashes between Houthi forces and Yemen’s government-backed forces.
Yemeni government forces have also carried out strikes against Houthi positions, according to reports, as fighting continues to intensify along the Red Sea.
The latest escalation follows a week-long Houthi offensive in the region, with the renewed violence forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
According to the United Nations, around 76,000 people have been displaced since July as a result of the deteriorating security situation.
The latest developments have raised concerns that the fighting could further destabilise Yemen and create additional risks for maritime security and shipping routes in the strategically important Red Sea.
