Tehran: Iran has conveyed seven conditions to the United States through intermediaries for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reported, saying an agreement with Oman alone would not reopen the strategic waterway.
The conditions have been communicated to Washington through mediators, with the strait to remain closed until they are met, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency. The report said Iran’s highest authorities had approved the conditions.
An Iranian source told Reuters that the understanding between Iran and Oman does not provide for the immediate reopening of the strait but establishes a basis on which it could reopen. The source said reopening depended entirely on the United States meeting Tehran’s conditions.
The southern route along Oman’s coast, which Washington has pushed to reopen, would remain closed under the arrangement, according to Iranian reports.
