WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran at the request of Pakistan, as diplomatic efforts continue to bring both sides back to negotiations.
The decision came after appeals from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, urging more time for diplomacy and de-escalation.
Trump said the ceasefire would remain in place until Iran submits a “unified proposal” and discussions are concluded, effectively delaying any potential resumption of military action.
Despite extending the truce, the United States will continue its naval blockade of Iranian ports, while keeping its military fully prepared for any escalation.
The extension came just hours before the initial two-week ceasefire was set to expire, providing a critical window for renewed negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan has been playing a central mediating role in the conflict, hosting talks and pushing both sides toward a diplomatic resolution.
However, tensions remain high, with Iranian officials criticising the continued US blockade and expressing skepticism over Washington’s intentions, warning that further pressure could provoke retaliation.
