WASHINGTON, Mar 11 (APP): A van crashed into a security barricade near the White House early Wednesday, prompting authorities to temporarily shut down the surrounding area in downtown Washington during the morning rush hour.
According to officials, the incident occurred before dawn at Lafayette Square, located just north of the White House. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and no injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for the United States Secret Service said a police bomb squad inspected the vehicle and later declared the scene safe.
“The individual is currently being interviewed by the Secret Service and criminal charges are pending,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
Authorities closed several major streets around the White House as dozens of emergency vehicles responded to the scene with flashing lights.
The incident caused traffic congestion in the area as office workers and tourists were prevented from entering the normally busy district.
Security in the US capital has remained heightened amid tensions related to the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict 2024–2026.
