Trump says US considering candidates for Iran’s future leadership

ISLAMABAD: United States President Donald Trump has said his administration is considering several potential candidates who could lead Iran after the ongoing military operation in the country.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Trump said Washington wants Iran to have leadership that could guide the country effectively once the conflict ends.

“We want them to have a good leader. We have some people who I think would do a good job,” he said, but declined to name any specific individuals.

Trump added that the United States was taking measures to monitor and protect individuals it believes could play a role in Iran’s future leadership.

“We are watching them,” he said.

The US president also stated that the objective of the military operation was to dismantle structures that could enable Iran to rebuild military capabilities over time.

“We want to go in and clean out everything,” he said, adding that the United States does not want a situation where the country could rebuild its capabilities over the next decade.

The remarks come amid the continuing US-led military campaign targeting Iran’s military infrastructure and strategic facilities.
