NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council has condemned reported Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and called for an immediate halt to the military escalation.
In a statement, council members said the attacks targeted civilian and energy infrastructure, raising concerns over the potential for further military escalation in the region.
The Security Council reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law and expressed solidarity with the kingdom following the reported attacks.
Council members urged the Houthis to immediately end their military escalation and called for restraint to prevent further actions that could intensify regional tensions.
The statement also addressed threats to maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Council members reiterated their condemnation of attacks targeting commercial shipping in the two strategic waterways.
The Security Council further reaffirmed its support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
The latest statement comes amid wider security concerns in the region, including threats to civilian and energy infrastructure and the safety of international shipping routes in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.
