Washington: The US Democrats would need the support of 13 additional senators to secure the required votes for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, as 67 votes in the Senate are necessary for his removal from office.
With Democrats holding 54 seats, even if all their members vote in favor of impeachment, they would still need 13 additional senators to support the move.
A simple majority in the 100-member Senate would not be sufficient to remove the president from office.
The impeachment process would also require separate legal and constitutional proceedings.
Political observers believe a Democratic victory could increase political pressure on President Trump, particularly if the Democratic Party also gains control of the House of Representatives.
