Islamabad — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally launched a programme to provide Chromebooks and internet facilities to 500,000 talented students across schools and religious seminaries in Pakistan. Under the initiative, the devices will be distributed among eligible students on merit over the next two years.
Addressing the launch ceremony, the prime minister said equipping talented children with modern technology and digital skills was a shared responsibility of the government and society. He said the initiative aimed to improve students’ access to digital education and enable them to compete at the international level.
Sharif said Chromebooks would be awarded strictly on the basis of merit and ability. Students would also receive school bags and internet devices to help them access online education and electronic libraries from home.
The prime minister said that six hundred thousand laptops had been distributed among students on merit over the past ten years. He added that similar initiatives had also been undertaken under the leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to provide laptops to students across the country.
