DOHA: Qatar says diplomatic contacts and discussions on various proposals have been underway for nearly two weeks to revive negotiations between the United States and Iran, with Pakistan also involved in efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said Qatar’s mediation team was in contact with both Tehran and Washington to assess the possibility of resuming talks.
He said mediators were travelling between different capitals in an effort to make progress.
Al Ansari said Qatar had also received assurances from US administration officials that Washington wanted to reach an agreement with Iran.
He stressed that a regional solution and broader international understanding were needed to promote stability in the region and ensure the security and freedom of navigation through key waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatar has repeatedly called for freedom of navigation through the Strait in accordance with international law and has said that decisions concerning its future should be reached through consensus among the countries concerned.
Pakistan and Qatar have previously worked together in facilitating US-Iran discussions, with Islamabad saying that its mediatory efforts remain focused on diplomacy, de-escalation and the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
