Clashes Erupt as Police Disperse Jamaat-e-Islami Rally Near Sindh Assembly in Karachi

Karachi (Web Desk) Karachi witnessed tense scenes on Tuesday as police baton-charged and used shelling to disperse a rally by Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan near the Sindh Assembly, while party workers allegedly resorted to stone-pelting. Police confirmed that more than 10 workers were taken into custody during the clashes.

According to ARY News, several Jamaat-e-Islami workers managed to reach the gates of the Sindh Assembly, where scuffles broke out between protesters and police personnel. Law enforcement authorities also seized a truck carrying a sound system used by the demonstrators.

Police officials stated that three policemen were injured as a result of stone-pelting by protesters. Heavy police contingents had earlier placed barricades around the Sindh Assembly to prevent the rally from reaching the premises. However, workers reportedly broke through the barriers and advanced towards the assembly gates.

Earlier, negotiations were held between Jamaat-e-Islami Member of the Provincial Assembly Farooq Farhan and police officials. Following the talks, police decided not to allow a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly and made it clear that protesters would not be permitted to approach the building.

Police contingents armed with batons were deployed on Court Road, while demonstrators attempted to remove barricades and march towards the Sindh Assembly, leading to the confrontation.
