NEW DELHI: India opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised with a stomach infection and is doubtful for Thursday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia in Delhi, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
According to Press Trust of India, the left-handed batter has been admitted to a private hospital in the capital for the past two days.
“Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a stomach infection,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source was quoted as saying.
The source added that medical tests are being conducted to determine the exact nature of the illness. “It is still unclear whether he will be discharged today. As of now, his participation in the match against Namibia looks doubtful,” the official said.
Abhishek’s health concerns first surfaced during India’s tournament opener against the United States in Mumbai, where he was dismissed for a first-ball duck and did not take the field during the opposition’s run chase.
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate later confirmed that the batter had been dealing with a stomach bug and expressed hope for his recovery.
If Abhishek fails to regain fitness in time, India may consider Sanju Samson as an opening option.
Meanwhile, India received encouraging news ahead of the Namibia clash as pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah resumed full training after missing the opener due to illness. All-rounder Washington Sundar has also rejoined the squad after recovering from a side strain and participated in net practice on Tuesday.
