Universal Sets 2028 Release for New Mummy Sequel

LOS ANGELES: Universal Pictures has announced that the next installment of The Mummy franchise will be released in theatres on May 19, 2028, marking the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to the popular adventure series.

The upcoming sequel will reunite Fraser and Weisz as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, roles that earned global acclaim in the earlier films. Fraser last appeared in the franchise in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, while Weisz’s most recent appearance was in The Mummy Returns in 2001.

The yet-untitled film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for helming Scream V, Scream VI and Ready or Not. The script is being written by David Coggeshall, who previously worked on Orphan: First Kill.

Speaking earlier about the project, Fraser said the forthcoming sequel reflects the version he had long hoped to make. “I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Now it’s time to give the fans what they want,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press.

First introduced in 1932, The Mummy franchise has produced multiple sequels, spin-offs and reboots, including a 2017 adaptation starring Tom Cruise.

With the original lead pair returning, the new film is expected to revive the spirit and adventure that defined the earlier installments.
