Islamabad: Pakistan’s poverty rate was recorded at 29% during the 2024-25 fiscal year, with approximately 72.6 million people living below the poverty line in 2024, according to a report released by the World Bank.
The report revealed that 23% of Pakistan’s population earns less than $3 per day, representing more than 57.6 million people.
According to the World Bank, over 120 million people in Pakistan earn less than $4.20 per day, accounting for 47.9% of the population.
Similarly, the number of people earning less than $8.30 per day has reached approximately 218.8 million, representing 87.1% of the country’s population.
The report further stated that Pakistan’s multidimensional poverty rate stood at 27.1% in 2024. Poverty was significantly higher in rural areas, where the rate reached 56.4%, compared to 34.4% in urban areas.
The World Bank identified rising inflation, economic slowdown and declining incomes as major factors contributing to increasing poverty in Pakistan.
It added that higher prices of food commodities and energy had particularly affected low-income households, further worsening the economic difficulties faced by vulnerable segments of society.
