WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance has offered to meet directly with Iran’s national security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, with Istanbul or Doha being considered as possible venues for the meeting, according to a report by The Washington Post.
Citing a US official, the newspaper reported that the Trump administration views Rezaei as an influential figure who could help build consensus on a potential agreement with Iran. US intelligence officials reportedly believe that Rezaei has close ties to Iran’s Supreme Leader.
According to the report, Vance sent a letter to Rezaei last week, urging both countries to use their national interests as the basis for negotiations. The letter reportedly made clear that Washington’s primary objective is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The proposed arrangement, as described in the report, would involve Iran halting its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Qatar is also playing an important mediating role in the diplomatic efforts and remains in contact with the Iranian leadership, the newspaper reported.
No official confirmation has yet been reported regarding the proposed meeting or its possible location.
