TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is conditional on the fulfillment of specific conditions and the conclusion of a negotiated agreement.
In a statement, Araghchi said Tehran had conveyed a peace proposal to the United States through Qatar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. However, he said US President Donald Trump had announced his rejection of the proposal.
Araghchi said Iran was still waiting for Washington’s final position through mediators.
Under Iran’s proposal, he said, an agreement would involve a seven-day process for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, along with an end to fighting in the region.
Iranian officials have also made clear that Tehran will not relinquish its rights under its nuclear program, including the right to uranium enrichment.
