UN calls for sustained reopening of Strait of Hormuz

NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has called for the sustained reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that all parties should honour the commitments they have made under any agreements reached.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Dujarric said the United Nations hopes the vital waterway remains open on a long-term basis. “I think it’s important that everybody live up to what they’ve committed to in every agreement that is signed,” he said.

He added that all parties involved should keep their focus on the greater good, including maintaining regional and global stability as well as safeguarding the well-being of seafarers.

Dujarric also highlighted the humanitarian impact of disruptions to shipping, noting that “thousands and thousands of men and women” have been stranded aboard ships. He said these workers play a crucial role in transporting the goods that people around the world rely on every day.
