WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington and Tehran have agreed to establish a direct communication channel involving Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as part of efforts to prevent further escalation between the two countries.
Speaking in an interview with , Vance said the arrangement would allow Iranian and US military officials to meet in Doha, Qatar, and address disputes through direct dialogue rather than confrontation.
According to Vance, the mechanism emerged from discussions with Iranian officials and would involve representatives from the IRGC and the US military’s Central Command maintaining contact in the Qatari capital.
“They were like, ‘OK, fine, we’ll send somebody from the IRGC to go hang out in Doha with somebody from [US Central Command]’, and that’s how we’re going to settle a lot of these disputes,” Vance said while describing the negotiations.
The vice president also highlighted the role of the United Arab Emirates in facilitating dialogue with Iran. He said the UAE had opened new communication channels with Tehran that previously did not exist, including direct engagement with the IRGC.
Vance added that Emirati officials were holding unprecedented discussions with Iranian counterparts, including members of the IRGC, on a range of issues. These talks, he said, include discussions about potential economic incentives aimed at improving relations and reducing regional tensions.
“The UAE is having conversations with the Iranians that have never happened before, including with the IRGC, about various types of economic incentives,” Vance said.
