Canada’s prime minister describes US-Iran MoU as ‘game-changer’

FRANCE: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between the United States and Iran a “game-changer”, saying he supports what he described as a “well-structured” and “positive” agreement.

Speaking to CNN on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Carney said he had seen the agreement and expressed approval of the deal.

“We’re very pleased with the deal that’s been struck,” he said, adding that it was a “game-changer”.

Carney said the agreement establishes the foundation to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon and could also pave the way for the gradual reintegration of regional economies.

“It sets the groundwork to ensure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said. “It sets the groundwork for a reintegration over time of the economies in the region. It sets the groundwork for a solution in Lebanon, which we discussed today. So it’s positive.”

The Canadian prime minister also told that the deal offers Iran “a big financial incentive” if it fulfils its commitments in the coming months, including steps such as opening the Strait of Hormuz and negotiating the transfer of its enriched uranium.
