Italy Fail to Qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026 After Loss to Bosnia

Zenica: Italy’s World Cup nightmare continued as the four-time champions failed to qualify for a third consecutive tournament after a dramatic play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties.

The match, played in Zenica, ended 1-1 after extra time before Bosnia triumphed 4-1 in the shootout, sealing their place in the 2026 finals.

The Italy national football team had taken an early lead through Moise Kean, but their hopes were dented when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off before halftime. Bosnia equalised late in the match through Haris Tabakovic, forcing the game into extra time and eventually penalties, where Italy faltered under pressure.

Only Sandro Tonali converted his penalty for Italy, while misses from Francesco Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante proved costly. Head coach Gennaro Gattuso admitted the result was difficult to accept, saying his team did not deserve such heartbreak after their efforts.

This marks a historic low for Italy, who have now missed three straight World Cups despite their rich legacy, including four titles.

Meanwhile, Bosnia advance to the expanded 48-team tournament in North America, joining other qualifiers like Türkiye, Czech Republic, and Sweden, keeping their dream alive on football’s biggest stage.
