Andy Weir Apologises After Criticising Star Trek Shows

LOS ANGELES: Bestselling author Andy Weir has apologised after making critical remarks about the Star Trek television lineup on Paramount+.

Weir’s comments went viral after appearing on the The Critical Drinker Podcast, where he revealed he had previously pitched a Star Trek series to executive producer Alex Kurtzman that was rejected.

While praising Kurtzman personally, Weir criticised most of the Kurtzman-era shows, though he described Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks as entertaining.

The remarks drew criticism from fellow author Don Winslow, who urged Weir to apologise.

Weir later posted a public apology on Facebook on March 30, saying his comments were intended as humour but came across as disrespectful when taken out of context.

He acknowledged the backlash and expressed regret, offering to speak directly with Kurtzman to address the issue.

The apology comes as Weir’s novel adaptation Project Hail Mary continues strong box-office performance, crossing $300 million globally and becoming Hollywood’s biggest film of 2026 so far, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
