WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has claimed that negotiations with Iran are underway through “the right people,” expressing optimism about a possible breakthrough in the near future.
According to international media reports, the US president said Washington is in contact with key Iranian figures via multiple channels and that progress toward a potential agreement could emerge soon.
Trump asserted that Iran appears interested in moving toward a deal under current circumstances. However, he did not disclose detailed specifics about the nature or scope of the ongoing contacts.
He named senior aides involved in the process, including Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, Marco Rubio, and JD Vance.
The US president further claimed that recent American military actions have significantly weakened Iran’s naval, leadership, and defence capabilities, altering the regional balance of power.
Trump reiterated that Washington has made it clear in talks that Iran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, adding that Tehran has accepted this condition.
He also revealed that the United States had earlier considered targeting Iran’s key energy infrastructure but held back after indications of Tehran’s willingness to engage in negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials have denied reports of direct talks with the United States, maintaining that any recent contacts, if at all, were limited to indirect exchanges through intermediaries rather than formal negotiations.
The conflicting statements highlight ongoing uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts amid heightened tensions in the region.
