Russia, Qatar, Iran, UN Call for Immediate Halt to Cross-Border Attacks

ISLAMABAD: Global powers on Friday urged restraint as Russia, Iran and the United Nations called on Pakistan and Afghanistan to immediately halt cross-border attacks and resolve their differences through diplomatic engagement amid escalating tensions.

Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar confirmed that Pakistan had delivered what he described as a strong and comprehensive response to unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban regime, resulting in the killing of 133 militants and injuries to more than 200 others.

According to security sources, Pakistan’s armed forces launched “Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq” after alleged unprovoked action by Afghan Taliban forces along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border. Several key Afghan Taliban posts were destroyed during the operation. Sources further claimed that Afghan Taliban fighters raised white flags at multiple positions following Pakistan’s response.

Russia

Russia called on both countries to immediately cease cross-border attacks and settle their differences through diplomatic channels. State-run RIA news agency, citing the Russian foreign ministry, reported that Moscow was urging both neighbours to halt hostilities without delay.

The Russian foreign ministry also indicated that Moscow would consider offering mediation if formally requested by both sides.

Iran

Iran offered to facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan after tensions flared. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran stood ready to provide assistance to promote dialogue and enhance mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries.

United Nations

In Geneva, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is closely monitoring the situation and is deeply concerned over the recent escalation, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

The UN chief stressed that both countries must fulfil their obligations under international law and underscored the urgent need to prioritise the protection of civilians.

Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomatic efforts succeed in de-escalating tensions along the border.
