ISLAMABAD: The reported involvement of women in militant attacks in Balochistan has raised concerns among security officials and analysts, who describe it as part of an evolving insurgent strategy aimed at expanding recruitment and influence.
According to official sources and security analysts, insurgent groups have recently circulated photographs and biographical details of alleged female suicide bombers, portraying them as part of propaganda efforts. Independent verification of the material was not immediately possible.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the use of women in militant activities was intended to increase the outreach and visibility of insurgent groups.
“It enhances their popularity and reach and gives the impression within their communities that militancy has entered domestic spaces,” he said, adding that Pakistan had raised concerns with various social media platforms regarding the online recruitment of militants.
Officials said that six women were reportedly involved in a series of attacks carried out in January, including three suicide bombers, which resulted in 58 deaths and disrupted normal life in parts of Balochistan.
Records indicate that prior to these incidents, five women had been involved in suicide attacks linked to banned outfits since 2022, while security agencies also foiled several attempted attacks by arresting suspected female militants in recent counter-terrorism operations.
Authorities believe that insurgent groups have enhanced their operational capabilities in recent years. Officials say militants have gained access to advanced weaponry left behind in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of United States forces in 2021.
Security analysts also noted the adoption of modern tactics by insurgents, including the reported use of drones for surveillance and satellite communication during major attacks, including the 2025 train hijacking involving hundreds of passengers.
The government has reiterated its commitment to counter militancy and curb extremist recruitment, particularly through digital platforms and coordinated security operations.
