ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the decision to impose governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was taken out of compulsion, arguing that the federal government could not remain a silent spectator while the province faced a deteriorating situation.
Drawing a comparison with Rome burning while Emperor Nero played the flute, Sharif said the government could not stand by and watch the province descend into destruction.
The prime minister blamed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi for the failure of negotiations between the federal and provincial governments.
Sharif said the federal government had offered to work jointly with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to combat terrorism and improve the security situation in the province.
He maintained that cooperation between the two governments was necessary to address the security challenges facing the province.
