WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate ceasefire aimed at halting Russian and Ukrainian attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, although Moscow has yet to confirm implementation.
According to foreign media reports, the proposed truce would prevent both sides from targeting power plants, electricity transmission systems and other energy facilities with airstrikes or missile attacks.
Sources cited in the reports said the ceasefire had taken immediate effect. The move aims to protect energy infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted electricity and energy supplies to civilians amid the ongoing war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s announcement, describing it as a positive development.
Speaking to a media outlet, Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow did the same.
He added that if Trump had reached an understanding with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the issue, the start date of the ceasefire should be specified, reiterating Ukraine’s readiness to implement the agreement.
Meanwhile, Moscow has yet to confirm whether it will comply with the energy ceasefire announced by the US president.
