Tehran: Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei has described Washington’s response to Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as “inadequate,” saying the strategic waterway will remain closed to the United States until Iran’s demands are met.
Speaking to Iranian state media, Rezaei said Washington had accepted some of the seven conditions presented by Tehran approximately two weeks ago. However, he maintained that the US response fell short of Iran’s requirements.
Rezaei said Iran would not hold talks with Washington until the conditions were fulfilled. In a post on X, he added that Iranian diplomacy had changed and that there would be no return to the previous status quo.
The Iranian official also mocked US President Donald Trump over what he described as Washington’s resort to “smuggling” after the US Navy failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. His remarks referred to reports of tankers crossing the waterway with their transponders switched off while under US naval escort.
Iran has largely restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the United States and Israel launched attacks against the country in February, while negotiations were underway.
The strait is a critical international shipping route for global energy supplies, making its disruption a major concern for oil markets and international maritime trade.
