ISLAMABAD: An opposition delegation called on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad to discuss the prevailing political situation and proposals for greater coordination among opposition parties.
Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Asad Qaiser, Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and other opposition leaders attended the meeting, while JUI-F leaders, including Senator Kamran Murtaza, also participated.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Fazlur Rehman said several proposals had emerged during political consultations, including the possibility of convening an All-Parties Conference (APC) to formulate a joint strategy.
He said the government had held talks with the opposition, adding that although JUI-F was not part of the negotiations, his party had no objection to the dialogue process.
“From what we have heard, the government has not left room for further negotiations in the future,” Fazlur Rehman said. He stressed that whenever political talks take place, they should be conducted in a political tone.
The JUI-F chief said he wanted the country to move toward political moderation and called for broader consultations among political parties.
He said the proposal for an APC had also been put forward, where participating parties could formulate a joint strategy through mutual consultation.
“We are all Pakistanis and stand with the country and the Constitution,” Fazlur Rehman said, adding that the APC would be held on the basis of a shared understanding among the participating parties.
Commenting on protests and long marches, he said such activities were a democratic right.
“We have also held long marches; it is a democratic right,” he said.
Fazlur Rehman added that if the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wanted to come to Islamabad and stage a protest, it should not be obstructed.
