CDF Munir holds talks with Erdogan, Turkish military chief in Ankara

ANKARA: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, according to a post shared by the Turkish Presidency on X.

The presidency’s post on Tuesday, accompanied by a photograph of the two leaders, said President Erdogan received Field Marshal Munir at Ankara Airport.

According to Reuters, the meeting was held behind closed doors at the airport. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Chief of the Turkish General Staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu and National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kalin also attended the meeting.

In a separate post on X, the Turkish Embassy in Pakistan said Field Marshal Munir was accorded a guard of honour by a tri-services contingent of the Turkish armed forces upon his arrival in Ankara.

The embassy said General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu welcomed the CDF during his official visit. “Rooted in brotherhood, mutual trust and a shared strategic vision, the enduring defence and military cooperation between Turkiye and Pakistan continues to grow stronger,” the embassy said.

Field Marshal Munir arrived in Turkiye on a two-day official visit on Monday. However, it remains unclear when exactly his meetings with President Erdogan and General Bayraktaroglu took place.

Pakistan has yet to issue an official statement regarding the visit. State media had earlier reported that the CDF would hold “important” meetings with Turkiye’s political and military leadership during the trip.

Last month, General Metin Tokel, commander of the Turkish Land Forces, visited Pakistan and met Field Marshal Munir. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two discussed regional security developments and ways to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.

During the visit, General Tokel also held separate meetings with Pakistan’s naval and air chiefs.
