Iran FM says strike on Beirut would collapse fragile truce

TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that any attack on Beirut would have serious consequences and could trigger a full-scale resumption of the conflict in the region.

In comments carried by Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Araghchi said Tehran had made it clear that it would not remain silent if Beirut came under attack. Speaking in an interview with Lebanese broadcaster , he stressed that an assault on the Lebanese capital would effectively reignite the war.

“Any attack on Beirut will have grave consequences and lead to a full resumption of war,” Araghchi said.

The Iranian foreign minister added that when Israel threatened to strike Beirut’s southern suburbs, Tehran adopted a firm position and placed its armed forces on full alert in preparation for a possible counterattack.

His remarks came amid heightened tensions following Israeli threats to target the southern suburbs of Beirut as part of its expanding military campaign in Lebanon.

However, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had secured commitments from both Israel and Hezbollah to halt hostilities. Trump portrayed the development as a diplomatic breakthrough that helped prevent a broader Israeli offensive and reduced the risk of a wider regional escalation.
