Iran Warns of Strikes on US Targets if Washington Intervenes

PARIS: Iran on Sunday warned it would target US military bases and shipping routes if Washington launches a new attack, as protests continue across the country and tensions escalate in the region.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that in the event of a US military strike, “occupied territories” as well as US military and maritime assets would be considered legitimate targets. His remarks were broadcast on state television.

The warning comes amid reports that Israel has moved to a high-alert posture over the possibility of US intervention in Iran. Sources familiar with Israeli security discussions said consultations were held over the weekend, though no operational details were disclosed.

Iran has witnessed widespread protests since December 28 over rising inflation and economic hardship. Tehran has accused the United States and Israel of fuelling the unrest.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned Iran’s leadership against using force on protesters and said on Saturday that Washington stood “ready to help.”

Israel and Iran fought a brief but intense conflict in June, during which the United States joined Israel in conducting airstrikes. An Israeli source said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday. A US official confirmed the call but declined to comment on its content.
