Washington: A new “Board of Peace” established by U.S. President Donald Trump has secured $17 billion in pledges for Gaza’s reconstruction following a potential ceasefire with Hamas.
The United States has committed $10 billion toward the initiative.
The board, chaired by President Trump, brings together a group of senior political and diplomatic figures, including Jared Kushner and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
According to preliminary details, the body is expected to coordinate post-conflict security oversight and manage large-scale development and reconstruction programs in Gaza, contingent upon the disarmament of Hamas.
The board’s structure has drawn criticism, as it does not include Palestinian representation. Although Israel has reportedly been offered a seat, no financial commitment has been announced from the Israeli side.
Separately, comments by U.S. official Steve Witkoff during an interview with Fox News have sparked debate.
Witkoff suggested that severely damaged areas in Gaza may need to be demolished as part of reconstruction efforts.
Supporters argue that clearing rubble is essential for modern redevelopment, while critics say such remarks overlook the scale of the humanitarian crisis and civilian suffering.
The United Nations estimates that rebuilding Gaza could require more than $50 billion, highlighting a significant gap between pledged funds and overall recovery needs.
