Islamabad (Special Correspondent) – Security was significantly tightened around Parliament House on Thursday in anticipation of a protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentarians, with police sealing the main gates and deploying a heavy contingent in the area.
According to reports, armored vehicles were stationed outside Parliament House, while Islamabad’s Red Zone was completely sealed. A large number of police personnel gathered at Radio Pakistan Chowk, and Shahrah-e-Dastoor was closed to traffic from that point onward.
Police reportedly prevented both citizens and members of the National Assembly from entering Parliament House. PTI lawmakers Iqbal Afridi and Umair Niazi were stopped at Radio Pakistan Chowk.
Despite the restrictions, PTI leaders managed to reach the main gate of Parliament House. However, due to the closure of the gates, PTI parliamentarians were unable to exit the premises.
In the Senate, Opposition Leader Raja Nasir Abbas led the protest, joined by senior political figures including Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Barrister Gohar. Opposition members later moved from the main gate toward the Cabinet Gate area.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai also met Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry to convey the opposition’s concerns. Barrister Gohar was also present during the meeting. Achakzai strongly protested against preventing parliamentarians from leaving Parliament House, terming the situation unacceptable.
Opposition members staged a sit-in inside the Parliament premises near the gate leading toward the President’s House. Protesters sat on the steps and chanted slogans against the government. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati also joined the sit-in.
Earlier, while speaking to the media, Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the protest would remain peaceful. He demanded that the founding chairman of PTI be allowed to meet his personal physician and family members.
“I was earlier informed that the PTI founder’s health is stable. There are capable doctors available in the country, and we want him to receive proper medical treatment. This matter should be resolved without further complications,” he stated.
