WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25 resulted in eight key deliverables and understandings following in-depth discussions with US President Donald Trump on China-US relations and major international and regional issues.
According to the understandings reached during the visit, the two sides agreed to build a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
China and the United States also agreed to support each other in successfully hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit. The two presidents intend to attend each other’s meetings.
On Iran, the two leaders agreed that Tehran should honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. They also agreed that no country or institution should be allowed to impose tolls on international waterways.
The two presidents recalled that China and the United States had been allies during World War II and fought side by side to achieve victory.
Trade and Economic Cooperation
The two sides recognized the positive role of their economic and trade consultation mechanism and endorsed the outcomes reached by their respective economic and trade teams.
These included establishing and advancing the Board of Trade and other mechanisms, an arrangement for a $30 billion reciprocal tariff reduction, and an extension of the outcomes of economic and trade consultations held in Kuala Lumpur. The two leaders instructed their respective sides to implement the agreements.
Counter-Narcotics Cooperation
China and the United States also noted visible results from cooperation between their counter-narcotics and law enforcement agencies.
The two countries have recently worked together to crack multiple cases involving new psychoactive substances and precursor chemicals, resulting in the apprehension of dozens of suspects in both countries.
AI Dialogue to Be Established
The two sides agreed to establish a China-US AI Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits associated with artificial intelligence.
The next exchange is scheduled for November 2026. China and the United States also agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for AI-related incidents.
Giant Pandas to Arrive in Atlanta
The United States welcomed the arrival of two giant pandas leased by China to Zoo Atlanta.
In addition, the Chinese and US militaries agreed to conclude a memorandum of understanding on crisis communication and prevention as soon as possible.
The two militaries will also continue cooperation in searching for the remains of missing US servicemembers in China.
