WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States and Iran to return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and resume dialogue aimed at resolving disputes in the Middle East.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed the Chinese president and his wife.
During the meeting, Xi expressed hope that the United States and Iran would reach a comprehensive agreement addressing the nuclear issue as well as other outstanding matters.
According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi called on Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations to help resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
The Chinese president said China had consistently maintained that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected. He added that Beijing had encouraged the relevant parties to remain committed to pursuing a peaceful solution.
Meanwhile, President Trump said he had a friendly relationship with Xi and that the United States was working toward establishing balanced trade relations with China.
Trump said the two leaders would also discuss important issues related to security and artificial intelligence during their meeting.
