OTTAWA: US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on a wide range of imports from Canada, citing what he described as Canada’s unfair treatment of American automobiles and dairy products.
According to the White House, the new tariffs will apply to several imported goods, including alcoholic beverages, hockey sticks, and industrial products such as cement. The measures are expected to take effect in 30 days.
President Trump said the decision was taken in response to Canada’s trade policies, which he claimed have placed American exporters at a disadvantage.
Reacting to the announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada remains prepared to accelerate trade negotiations with the United States in the coming weeks to address the emerging issues and seek a mutually beneficial resolution.
