Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone conversation with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to discuss recent developments in Lebanon and ongoing efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
During the call, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He also highlighted the importance of building on the US-sponsored “framework agreement” to secure a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tamim Khalaf.
Berri thanked Egypt for its support during the current crisis, a statement said.
The conversation took place as divisions deepen in Lebanon over the agreement with Israel, which the United States has described as an initial step towards ending months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has rejected the deal, while Berri, the leader of the Amal movement and a key mediator between the Lebanese government and Hezbollah, has urged calm. However, he has also criticised the agreement, describing it as one-sided.
