Pakistan, Indonesia Reaffirm Defence Ties During High-Level Military Talks

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening long-term defence cooperation with Indonesia during a high-level meeting at General Headquarters (GHQ), according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Indonesia’s Defence Minister, Lieutenant General (Retd) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, called on the CDF at GHQ, where both sides discussed matters of mutual interest, evolving regional and global security dynamics, and avenues for enhancing bilateral defence collaboration.

The meeting underscored the importance of expanding institutional linkages, training cooperation, and defence industrial collaboration between Pakistan and Indonesia. The visiting dignitary praised the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. He also conveyed Indonesia’s interest in broadening defence ties with Pakistan across multiple domains.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to building a strong and enduring defence partnership with Indonesia, grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and converging strategic interests.

Defence Deal Talks Underway

Earlier, the Indonesian defence minister also met Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu in Islamabad, where discussions reportedly included a potential defence deal involving the sale of combat aircraft and armed drones.

According to security sources, talks focused on Pakistan-China jointly developed JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and advanced surveillance and strike-capable drones. Two sources indicated that negotiations were at an advanced stage and could involve more than 40 JF-17 aircraft, along with interest in Pakistan’s Shahpar drones.

Indonesia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the meeting, stating that discussions centred on broader defence cooperation, strategic dialogue, and long-term mutually beneficial opportunities. However, officials said no final decisions have yet been made, and details regarding timelines or delivery schedules were not disclosed.
