TEHRAN: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh has said that the decision on whether to reach an agreement is now in Washington’s hands, stressing that Tehran does not trust the US administration.
In an interview with Russian television, Khatibzadeh said Iran had conveyed its proposals to the United States through mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, and had already given its initial response to Washington’s position on the proposals.
“The ball is in the US court,” Khatibzadeh said, adding that Iran had many reasons for not trusting the current US administration.
He said Iran was seeking concrete guarantees for a ceasefire on all fronts as part of any potential agreement.
According to the Iranian deputy foreign minister, Tehran’s proposals also include guarantees for the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to maritime and economic blockades.
Khatibzadeh said Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States fulfilled all of its commitments.
He stressed that any agreement would require Washington to meet its obligations and provide credible guarantees to Iran.
