BEIRUT: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and French President Emmanuel Macron have discussed the situation in southern Lebanon following the recently announced ceasefire, according to the Lebanese presidency.
During a telephone conversation, the two leaders reviewed the latest developments in Lebanon and the broader region, particularly in light of the recent US-Iran negotiations held in Switzerland.
The discussions also focused on conditions in southern Lebanon after the ceasefire announcement and the steps required to support stability in the area. According to the Lebanese presidency, both leaders exchanged views on the next phase following the cessation of hostilities.
Aoun and Macron further discussed the future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), whose current mandate is set to expire as the mission approaches the end of its operations in Lebanon at the beginning of 2027.
The Lebanese presidency said several European countries have expressed interest in maintaining forces within the international operational area after Unifil’s withdrawal, a proposal that has received Lebanon’s support.
President Macron said he would consult with a number of countries on the matter and work towards establishing the necessary framework for any future international participation before the deadline for Unifil’s withdrawal.
