R4 terms US-Iran MoU signing a constructive step towards de-escalation, praises Pakistan’s mediation role

CAIRO: The Regional 4 (R4) meeting held in Cairo has welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, describing it as a “constructive step towards de-escalation”.

According to a joint statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO), the meeting provided an opportunity for a detailed exchange of views on regional and international developments. The participating countries reaffirmed the importance of continued consultation and coordination among Pakistan, Egypt, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia to promote regional stability and peace.

Discussing recent regional developments, the ministers particularly welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran on June 18, 2026.

The statement said the ministers viewed the agreement as an important development that could help reduce tensions and contribute towards ending a conflict that had posed serious risks to regional security and stability, as well as to energy markets, international maritime routes, global supply chains and international trade.

The ministers also appreciated the efforts of regional and international stakeholders who helped facilitate the signing of the MoU and stressed the need for the parties to fully implement their commitments.

The statement highlighted Pakistan’s role in the process, saying the ministers “lauded the instrumental efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan” in achieving the outcome. They also recognised the support provided by Qatar in helping bring the negotiations over the MoU to a successful conclusion.

The ministers further commended Pakistan’s continued close coordination with them on this important issue.
