Iran Envoy Highlights Pakistan’s Key Role in Ongoing US Talks

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam on Sunday reaffirmed that Islamabad continues to play a central mediating role in Iran’s negotiations with the United States.

“Pakistan remains a mediator, and no decision has been made to alter this,” the envoy said in an interview with an Iranian news agency. He added that progress in the talks hinges on a shift in Washington’s approach.

His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump expressed doubts over the prospects of a new Iranian peace proposal.

According to Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies, Tehran submitted a 14-point proposal to mediator Islamabad on Saturday. The proposal reportedly includes measures to end the conflict on all fronts and introduce a new framework governing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Moghadam confirmed these developments, stating that Iran had conveyed a fresh negotiation plan to Washington through Pakistan. He described Islamabad’s role in the process as “valuable” and pivotal to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The envoy maintained that Tehran has remained “transparent in its position and demands,” stressing that meaningful progress would only be possible if the United States changes its behaviour. He also reiterated that Iran would not compromise on its national interests or defence.

Talks between Iran and the US have been stalled since the April 8 ceasefire. A previous round of negotiations held in Islamabad failed to resolve the conflict.

Pakistan played a key role in brokering the ceasefire following a six-week conflict that began on February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched joint attacks on Iran.

The conflict significantly disrupted the global economy, particularly after Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Although Tehran briefly reopened the passage for commercial traffic, it later closed it again, citing US ceasefire violations and the ongoing naval blockade of its ports.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Moghadam said the international community was closely observing Iran’s “clear and logical stance,” while criticising what he described as inconsistency in US policy.

Reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy, he said Washington must abandon its “aggressive posture” and respect Iran’s rights for negotiations to move forward.

He also highlighted strengthening political, economic, and trade relations between Pakistan and Iran, noting that border crossings between the two countries remain vital for bilateral trade and regional connectivity.
