Islamabad: Pakistan commemorated Pakistan Day on Monday with traditional zeal and patriotic fervour, though celebrations remained modest in line with government-imposed austerity measures amid the ongoing Gulf oil crisis.
Observed annually on March 23, Pakistan Day marks the historic passage of the Lahore Resolution in 1940, when the All-India Muslim League formally demanded a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent.
This year’s observance comes against the backdrop of a worsening global oil crisis, triggered by escalating tensions linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has significantly impacted economies worldwide, including Pakistan.
In response, the federal government recently introduced austerity measures aimed at stabilizing the national economy and reducing expenditures.
The day began with traditional gun salutes in the federal and provincial capitals, followed by nationwide flag-hoisting ceremonies to honour the significance of the occasion. Despite scaled-down events, the spirit of patriotism remained strong across the country.
In Lahore, a dignified change of guards ceremony was held at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, where a contingent of the Pakistan Air Force took over ceremonial responsibilities, paying tribute to the national poet and visionary.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their greetings to the nation, emphasizing unity, resilience, and national solidarity.
In his message, President Zardari highlighted that Pakistan Day serves as a powerful reminder that unity and collective determination are key to transforming national aspirations into reality.
He paid tribute to the sacrifices of the founding leaders and acknowledged the foundational role of the 1940 resolution in the creation of Pakistan.
He further noted that despite facing early post-independence challenges, Pakistan has made significant strides through collective efforts, including strengthening national institutions, achieving nuclear capability, and effectively combating terrorism.
Pakistan Day 2026 is thus being observed with a renewed commitment to the ideals of unity, faith, and discipline, while the nation navigates economic challenges and evolving regional dynamics with resilience and resolve.
