Minister Shehbaz Sharif has claimed that militants were brought back from Afghanistan and resettled in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in 2019 and 2020, warning that the province could have suffered further damage if Governor\u2019s Rule and emergency measures had not been imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the parliamentary party and office-bearers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the prime minister said the decision to impose Governor\u2019s Rule was taken under unavoidable circumstances to protect the people, the country\u2019s economy and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Describing KP as a beautiful province with courageous and dignified people, Sharif said PML-N had played an important role in promoting democratic traditions in the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled that after the 2013 general elections, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had allowed the majority party to form the provincial government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criticising the party that has governed KP for the past 13 years, Shehbaz Sharif questioned how many universities and hospitals had been established during this period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said political slogans and divisions had taken precedence over public service, while problems from Peshawar to Kohistan, Hazara and the southern districts remained neglected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prime minister acknowledged the sacrifices made by the people, police, armed forces and political leadership of KP in the fight against terrorism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Pakistan had suffered enormous human and economic losses, adding that the entire nation and state institutions had worked together to eliminate terrorism during Nawaz Sharif&#8217;s tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recalling the Army Public School (APS) tragedy in Peshawar, he said the martyrdom of innocent children would remain one of the darkest chapters in the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharif also criticised the politics of long marches and sit-ins over the past two and a half years, claiming that the 2014 sit-in had led to the postponement of Chinese President Xi Jinping&#8217;s visit to Pakistan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said important agreements were signed during Xi&#8217;s subsequent visit in 2015 and credited Nawaz Sharif&#8217;s government with ending prolonged electricity load-shedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Referring to the resurgence of terrorism, the prime minister alleged that militants had been brought back from Afghanistan and settled in Pakistan during 2019 and 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the renewed wave of terrorism had caused significant damage to the country and regretted that his calls for collective action against terrorism had not been heeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the 2010 National Finance Commission (NFC) Award had allocated an additional one per cent share of resources to KP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the prime minister, the province had received Rs800 billion under the arrangement, questioning how many Safe City projects had been established using these funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also questioned the performance of the provincial Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), saying that 5,000 vacant police positions had not been filled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that available provincial resources should have been used to equip the police with modern weapons and provide professional training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the economic front, Shehbaz Sharif said the country&#8217;s political and military leadership had worked together to stabilise the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He acknowledged that international developments and the Gulf conflict had caused an extraordinary increase in energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the economic challenges, he said the government had launched a fuel subsidy scheme to provide relief to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the prime minister, 13 million people had benefited from the scheme, while Rs75 billion had been allocated for public relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defending the imposition of Governor\u2019s Rule and emergency measures in KP, Sharif said the government had first attempted to resolve the situation through negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said committees representing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and PML-N held talks for 48 hours, after which the government waited for approval of an agreed draft.
