London: The United Kingdom has reportedly deployed three of its four nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines at sea simultaneously for the first time in five years, raising questions about the country’s nuclear deterrence posture.

According to British media reports, the submarines currently at sea are HMS Vanguard, HMS Vigilant and HMS Vengeance. At least one of them is equipped with ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The fourth submarine, HMS Victorious, is undergoing maintenance.

Under its continuous at-sea deterrence policy, the UK maintains at least one ballistic missile submarine at sea at all times to preserve its ability to respond to a potential nuclear attack. The simultaneous deployment of three submarines is therefore being viewed as an unusual development.

The reported deployment has prompted speculation about whether Britain is adjusting its defence posture following recent remarks by Defence Secretary John Healey?

The independent Royal Navy monitoring organisation Navy Lookout has stated that the UK has maintained a continuous at-sea presence of at least one ballistic missile submarine since 1969.

According to Sky News, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson described the UK’s nuclear deterrent as the foundation of national security, saying it protects Britain and its NATO allies at all times.

The Ministry of Defence has not, in the information provided, confirmed that the deployment represents a change in the country’s nuclear policy.
