ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have reached a staff-level agreement under two ongoing programs, paving the way for the disbursement of $1.21 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the fourth review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), Pakistan will receive $1 billion, while another $210 million will be provided under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). With these disbursements, the total amount under the two programs will rise to $5.7 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the IMF, Pakistan has maintained overall macroeconomic stability despite difficult global and regional conditions, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic growth stood at 4 percent during the first nine months of 2026, while full-year growth is estimated at 3.6 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inflation, which reached its highest level in May, declined to 10.3 percent in September, the IMF said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fund noted that Pakistan’s current account remained balanced, supported by strong growth in workers’ remittances. Foreign exchange reserves reached $21.5 billion by the end of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF also described improvements in Pakistan’s sovereign credit rating and renewed access to international financial markets as signs of increased confidence in the country’s economic policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Fund warned that geopolitical tensions, volatile energy prices, tighter global financial conditions and trade disruptions continue to pose significant risks to the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF urged Pakistan to maintain fiscal discipline and adhere to a target of a primary surplus equivalent to 2 percent of GDP in the fiscal year 2027 budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also called for simplifying the tax system and making it more business-friendly, while expanding the use of digital invoicing, audits and third-party data in tax collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fund welcomed increased spending on health and education, which rose from 2.2 percent of GDP in fiscal year 2024 to 2.5 percent in the current fiscal year. Pakistan aims to increase the allocation to 2.8 percent of GDP in fiscal year 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF also recommended increasing cash assistance for low-income groups while calling for the early elimination of broad-based fuel subsidies. It said that if oil prices rise exceptionally in the future, support should be targeted only at vulnerable and deserving households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Bank of Pakistan was advised to maintain an appropriately tight monetary policy to bring inflation down, allow flexibility in the exchange rate and continue building foreign exchange reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF also stressed the need for timely adjustments in electricity and gas tariffs, measures to prevent the accumulation of circular debt, greater private-sector participation in electricity distribution, stronger competition and reductions in gas-sector losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fund further called for progress on privatization, improved performance and transparency of state-owned enterprises, stronger business competition, reduced trade and regulatory barriers, institutional measures against corruption, and policies to promote private investment and exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF said Pakistan has made progress toward overall economic stabilization, but emphasized that continued reforms remain essential amid risks from inflation, energy prices, debt and persistent global and regional uncertainty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
