NEW YORK:<\/strong> The question of Palestine and the humanitarian situation in Gaza emerged as one of the central themes of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with leaders and foreign ministers from major powers, Arab and Muslim countries, and nations across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America calling for an end to civilian suffering, unhindered humanitarian assistance and a political settlement guaranteeing Palestinian self-determination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large number of speakers reaffirmed support for an independent Palestinian state, generally on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, while several countries stressed that international law must be applied consistently and that the two-state solution remains the principal framework for a lasting settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Palestinian delegation’s participation itself became an issue at the session. The General Assembly adopted a resolution by 152 votes to 3, with four abstentions, allowing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to participate through a prerecorded address after Palestinian officials were denied U.S. visas. China and other states criticized the denial of Palestinian representatives’ physical participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Arabia: Prince Faisal bin Farhan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud reiterated the Kingdom’s support for Palestinian statehood and condemned what Saudi Arabia described as continued suffering, attacks on civilians, obstruction of humanitarian assistance, forced displacement and settlement expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Arabia said a just and lasting peace requires implementation of the two-state solution and establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riyadh has also continued to play a central role in international diplomatic efforts surrounding the two-state solution. At a high-level ministerial meeting during the UNGA week, Prince Faisal again described the objective as a sovereign, viable and contiguous Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif devoted a significant portion of his UNGA address to the Palestinian issue, recalling the stories of Palestinian children Hind Rajab and eight-year-old Wafaa Akila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shehbaz Sharif questioned whether a child born in Gaza should not have the same life, future and dreams as children elsewhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the deaths of Hind Rajab, Wafaa Akila and countless other Palestinians would remain an indictment of what he described as collective silence and inaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan reiterated its support for an independent, sovereign, viable and contiguous Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Pakistani officials subsequently said the speech had presented the case of the Muslim world at the General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00fcrkiye: President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan made Palestine a major part of his UNGA address, highlighting the humanitarian suffering in Gaza and the situation in the West Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erdo\u011fan said Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank had suffered grave injustices and argued that the international community could not remain indifferent to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Turkish president also called attention to Palestinian children who had suffered severe injuries and amputations and raised concerns over access to holy sites in Jerusalem and the future of UNRWA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN’s T\u00fcrkiye office confirmed that Erdo\u011fan addressed the General Debate of the 81st session on September 22 and focused particularly on the situation of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran: President Masoud Pezeshkian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the General Assembly that lasting peace in West Asia could not be achieved while the Palestinian issue remained unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pezeshkian argued that occupation, aggression and injustice would continue to generate resistance and maintained that Palestine must be addressed as part of any durable regional peace framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks came amid a broader Iranian emphasis at the UN on sovereignty, international law and the Palestinian question. The official UN transcript confirms Pezeshkian’s address during the 81st session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France: President Emmanuel Macron<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

French President Emmanuel Macron challenged governments that had recognized Palestine but, in his words, remained insufficiently active in responding to the humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macron questioned whether the international community could simply watch the suffering in Gaza and called for respect for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also criticized developments in the occupied West Bank and warned that settlement activity was undermining the possibility of a viable Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France has continued to support the two-state framework and has worked with Saudi Arabia and other countries on international efforts aimed at advancing Palestinian statehood. China also called for the Palestinian question to be returned to what it described as the proper track of the two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing has separately emphasized that Palestinian national rights and the two-state solution should remain central to international diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia: Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for Palestinian statehood on the basis of relevant UN decisions and warned that continued settlement expansion in the West Bank could undermine the possibility of establishing a viable Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia reiterated that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remained critical and called for a political settlement of the Palestinian question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov has also repeatedly linked Palestinian statehood to the implementation of relevant UN resolutions and the two-state framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia: Foreign Minister Sugiono<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the need for international law to be applied consistently, sovereignty to be respected and colonialism to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia presented Palestine as a major test of the international system and its commitment to international law and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on Indonesia’s own historical experience with colonialism, Jakarta reaffirmed its longstanding support for Palestinian self-determination and statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia: Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said the international community could not treat Gaza simply as another humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia stressed the need to move from reaction to prevention and argued that the enormous human cost of the Gaza conflict could not be addressed merely through statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kuala Lumpur reiterated its support for Palestinian rights and international efforts aimed at achieving justice and a political settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangladesh: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reaffirmed Dhaka’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people during his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the people of Bangladesh remained deeply concerned about the plight of the Palestinian people and reiterated Bangladesh’s support for their legitimate demands, including their right to self-determination and their right to establish an independent State of Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the high-level General Debate of the 81st UNGA in New York and addressed the Assembly on September 24, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egypt: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s categorical rejection of any attempt to displace Palestinians from Gaza, the West Bank or East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egypt said the international community had a responsibility to halt violations of international law and argued that peace could not be achieved through the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cairo again called for an independent, sovereign and geographically contiguous Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, within the two-state framework. Egyptian officials reiterated this position during meetings on the sidelines of UNGA 81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India: Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said India believes a durable and lasting peace requires a two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India also highlighted its humanitarian assistance and relief efforts for Palestinians, while maintaining its stated support for a negotiated political settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norway: Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said there was no alternative to the two-state solution and called for implementation rather than further delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norway emphasized that international law must apply universally and warned that the deteriorating situation on the ground was making the prospects for Palestinian statehood increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norway has been among the countries working with Saudi Arabia, France and others on the international two-state process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maldives: Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maldives Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef strongly focused on Palestine in his UNGA address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the suffering of Palestinians could not be separated from questions of international law and accountability. The Maldives called for an end to the occupation and settlement expansion, safe and rapid humanitarian assistance and respect for international judicial decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Maldives also reiterated its call for recognition of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and supported full UN membership for Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bahrain: Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bahraini Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani reaffirmed his country’s support for an independent and geographically contiguous Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bahrain also joined international diplomatic efforts surrounding the implementation of the two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tajikistan: Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin described the situation in Palestine as a matter of deep concern and called for an end to civilian suffering, a lasting ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tajikistan reaffirmed support for an independent and sovereign Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living alongside Israel in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Marino: Foreign Minister Luca Beccari<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

San Marino Foreign Minister Luca Beccari<\/strong> reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Marino called for a permanent ceasefire, safe and unhindered humanitarian access and protection of civilians, while also supporting the continued operation of UNRWA and humanitarian organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also expressed concern over settlement expansion, settler violence, demolitions and evictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philippines: Representative to the UN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Philippines<\/strong> reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and said it considers the two-state solution the framework for lasting peace, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belize: Representative to the UN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Belizean representative<\/strong> delivered one of the most strongly worded statements on Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belize described the situation as a legal and moral test for the international community and called for an end to what its representative characterized as apartheid and genocide, as well as an end to the occupation and what the representative described as settler colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These characterizations were statements by the Belizean representative rather than findings adopted by the General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazakhstan: Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev<\/strong> said a just and lasting Middle East peace requires an independent, sovereign and viable State of Palestine living alongside Israel in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazakhstan also supported the New York Declaration as a framework for concrete, time-bound and irreversible steps toward the two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brunei: Representative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brunei reiterated that Palestinians have waited generations for justice, statehood and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brunei representative highlighted the humanitarian suffering in Gaza, including the deaths of civilians, medical workers, journalists, humanitarian personnel and UN staff, and called for equal application of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brunei supported an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mauritania: Representative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mauritania said the international community, particularly the United Nations, bears responsibility for protecting Palestinians and ending their suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mauritanian representative also criticized the absence of a Palestinian delegation from the physical General Debate and called for Palestinians to be able to participate directly in UN forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thailand: Prime Minister<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thailand’s Prime Minister said peace requires more than the absence of war and must be based on dialogue, international law, security and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangkok said the continuing situation in Palestine demonstrated the need for universal application of human rights principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanzania<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tanzania expressed deep concern over the prolonged conflict and humanitarian suffering in Gaza and called for civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian assistance and renewed diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanzania reaffirmed support for the two-state solution and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vietnam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vietnam called for the protection of civilians in every conflict, respect for international humanitarian law and guaranteed humanitarian access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hanoi reaffirmed support for Palestinian self-determination and an independent Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel under the two-state framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Djibouti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Djibouti reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and support for their legitimate rights, particularly the right to establish an independent and sovereign state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Niger expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Palestine, particularly Gaza, and called for civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access and a just and lasting peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niger reaffirmed support for a two-state solution allowing Palestine and Israel to live side by side in peace, security and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chad reiterated its support for Palestinian statehood within the 1967 borders and for coexistence between Palestine and Israel in peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Broad International Message<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The statements at UNGA 81 showed broad international support for several recurring principles concerning Palestine: protection of civilians, unrestricted humanitarian assistance, rejection of forced displacement, opposition to settlement expansion, respect for international law, Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly significant diplomatic theme was the continued international push for the two-state solution. The UN Secretary-General said the solution should be based on the pre-1967 lines and warned that developments in the occupied Palestinian territory were systematically eroding the conditions required for a viable, sovereign and contiguous Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Arabia, France, Norway and other states also convened a high-level ministerial meeting during UNGA week focused on implementation of the two-state solution, demonstrating that the issue was being addressed not only through General Debate speeches but also through diplomatic initiatives outside the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Countries Supporting Palestinian Statehood and Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the countries highlighted above, Palestine received expressions of support during the 81st session and its high-level diplomatic activities from a broad range of states, including Jordan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Comoros, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda and others, with the precise nature of support differing from recognition of Palestinian statehood to humanitarian assistance, support for the two-state solution, ceasefire calls or opposition to settlement expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A notable diplomatic grouping during the UNGA week included Saudi Arabia, T\u00fcrkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which have continued joint diplomatic efforts on Gaza and Palestinian statehood. The UN’s Question of Palestine records these countries’ joint initiatives during 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall picture emerging from UNGA 81 was therefore one of wide international support for Palestinian self-determination and statehood, although countries differed significantly over the language they used, the extent of their criticism of Israel, the mechanisms for accountability and the practical steps required to achieve a political settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, settlement expansion in the West Bank and the future of Palestinian statehood remaining central issues, the 81st General Assembly placed renewed emphasis on translating diplomatic declarations into concrete political and humanitarian action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
